1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming ?

1 Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity?

2 On that day (many) faces will be downcast,

2 (Some) faces on that day shall be downcast,

3 Toiling, weary,

Shakir

3 Laboring, toiling,

Pickthall

4 Scorched by burning fire,

Shakir

4 Entering into burning fire,

Pickthall

5 Drinking from a boiling spring,

Shakir

5 Made to drink from a boiling spring.

Pickthall

6 No food for them save bitter thorn - fruit

Shakir

6 They shall have no food but of thorns,

Pickthall

7 Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.

Shakir

7 Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger.

8 In that day other faces will be calm,

Shakir

8 (Other) faces on that day shall be happy,

9 Glad for their effort past,

Shakir

9 Well - pleased because of their striving,

Pickthall

10 In a high Garden

Shakir

10 In a lofty garden,

Pickthall

11 Where they hear no idle speech,

Shakir

11 Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.

12 Wherein is a gushing spring,

Shakir

12 Therein is a fountain flowing,

Pickthall

13 Wherein are couches raised

Shakir

13 Therein are thrones raised high,

Pickthall

14 And goblets set at hand

Shakir

14 And drinking - cups ready placed,

Pickthall

15 And cushions ranged

Shakir

15 And cushions set in a row,

Pickthall

16 And silken carpets spread.

Shakir

16 And carpets spread out.

Pickthall

17 Will they not regard the camels, how they are created ?

Shakir

17 Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created?

18 And the heaven, how it is raised ?

Shakir

18 And the heaven, how it is reared aloft,

Pickthall

19 And the hills, how they are set up ?

Shakir

19 And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed,

Pickthall

20 And the earth, how it is spread ?

Shakir

20 And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse?

Pickthall

21 Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,

Shakir

21 Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.

Pickthall

22 Thou art not at all a warder over them.

Shakir

22 You are not a watcher over them;

Pickthall

23 But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,

Shakir

23 But whoever turns back and disbelieves,

Pickthall

24 Allah will punish him with direst punishment.

Shakir

24 Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.

Pickthall

25 Lo! unto Us is their return

Shakir

25 Surely to Us is their turning back,

Pickthall

26 And Ours their reckoning.

Shakir

26 Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account.
