1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. By those who drag forth to destruction,

Yusuf Ali

1 By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence;

Transliteration

1 WaalnnaziAAati gharqan

2 By the meteors rushing,

Yusuf Ali

2 By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed);

Transliteration

2 Waalnnashitati nashtan

Pickthall

3 By the lone stars floating,

Yusuf Ali

3 And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy),

Transliteration

3 Waalssabihati sabhan

Pickthall

4 By the angels hastening,

Yusuf Ali

4 Then press forward as in a race,

Transliteration

4 Faalssabiqati sabqan

5 And those who govern the event,

Yusuf Ali

5 Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord),

Transliteration

5 Faalmudabbirati amran

6 On the day when the first trump resoundeth.

Yusuf Ali

6 One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,

Transliteration

6 Yawma tarjufu alrrajifatu

7 And the second followeth it,

Yusuf Ali

7 Followed by oft - repeated (commotions):

Transliteration

7 TatbaAAuha alrradifatu

8 On that day hearts beat painfully

Yusuf Ali

8 Hearts that Day will be in agitation;

Transliteration

8 Quloobun yawmaithin wajifatun

Pickthall

9 While eyes are downcast

Yusuf Ali

9 Cast down will be (their owners') eyes.

Transliteration

9 Absaruha khashiAAatun

Pickthall

10 (Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state

Yusuf Ali

10 They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?

Transliteration

10 Yaqooloona ainna lamardoodoona fee alhafirati

Pickthall

11 Even after we are crumbled bones ?

Yusuf Ali

11 "What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?"

Transliteration

11 Aitha kunna AAithaman nakhiratan

Pickthall

12 They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.

Yusuf Ali

12 They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!"

Transliteration

12 Qaloo tilka ithan karratun khasiratun

Pickthall

13 Surely it will need but one shout,

Yusuf Ali

13 But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry,

Transliteration

13 Fainnama hiya zajratun wahidatun

Pickthall

14 And lo! they will be awakened.

Yusuf Ali

14 When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment).

Transliteration

14 Faitha hum bialssahirati

15 Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses ?

Yusuf Ali

15 Has the story of Moses reached thee?

Transliteration

15 Hal ataka hadeethu moosa

Pickthall

16 How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa,

Yusuf Ali

16 Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa: -

Transliteration

16 Ith nadahu rabbuhu bialwadi almuqaddasi tuwan

Pickthall

17 (Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled -

Yusuf Ali

17 "Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds:

Transliteration

17 Ithhab ila firAAawna innahu tagha

Pickthall

18 And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace) ?

Yusuf Ali

18 "And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)? -

Transliteration

18 Faqul hal laka ila an tazakka

Pickthall

19 Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).

Yusuf Ali

19 "'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'"

Transliteration

19 Waahdiyaka ila rabbika fatakhsha

Pickthall

20 And he showed him the tremendous token.

Yusuf Ali

20 Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign.

Transliteration

20 Faarahu alayata alkubra

Pickthall

21 But he denied and disobeyed,

Yusuf Ali

21 But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance);

Transliteration

21 Fakaththaba waAAasa

Pickthall

22 Then turned he away in haste,

Yusuf Ali

22 Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).

Transliteration

22 Thumma adbara yasAAa

Pickthall

23 Then gathered he and summoned

Yusuf Ali

23 Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation,

Transliteration

23 Fahashara fanada

Pickthall

24 And proclaimed: "I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest."

Yusuf Ali

24 Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High".

Transliteration

24 Faqala ana rabbukumu alaAAla

Pickthall

25 So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.

Yusuf Ali

25 But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life.

Transliteration

25 Faakhathahu Allahu nakala alakhirati waaloola

Pickthall

26 Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth.

Yusuf Ali

26 Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah).

Transliteration

26 Inna fee thalika laAAibratan liman yakhsha

Pickthall

27 Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built ?

Yusuf Ali

27 What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it:

Transliteration

27 Aantum ashaddu khalqan ami alssamao banaha

Pickthall

28 He raised the height thereof and ordered it;

Yusuf Ali

28 On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection.

Transliteration

28 RafaAAa samkaha fasawwaha

Pickthall

29 And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof.

Yusuf Ali

29 Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light).

Transliteration

29 Waaghtasha laylaha waakhraja duhaha

Pickthall

30 And after that He spread the earth,

Yusuf Ali

30 And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);

Transliteration

30 Waalarda baAAda thalika dahaha

Pickthall

31 And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof,

Yusuf Ali

31 He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture;

Transliteration

31 Akhraja minha maaha wamarAAaha

Pickthall

32 And He made fast the hills,

Yusuf Ali

32 And the mountains hath He firmly fixed; -

Transliteration

32 Waaljibala arsaha

Pickthall

33 A provision for you and for your cattle.

Yusuf Ali

33 For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

Transliteration

33 MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

Pickthall

34 But when the great disaster cometh,

Yusuf Ali

34 Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event), -

Transliteration

34 Faitha jaati alttammatu alkubra

Pickthall

35 The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour,

Yusuf Ali

35 The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for,

Transliteration

35 Yawma yatathakkaru alinsanu ma saAAa

Pickthall

36 And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth,

Yusuf Ali

36 And Hell - Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see, -

Transliteration

36 Waburrizati aljaheemu liman yara

Pickthall

37 Then, as for him who rebelled

Yusuf Ali

37 Then, for such as had transgressed all bounds,

Transliteration

37 Faamma man tagha

Pickthall

38 And chose the life of the world,

Yusuf Ali

38 And had preferred the life of this world,

Transliteration

38 Waathara alhayata alddunya

Pickthall

39 Lo! hell will be his home.

Yusuf Ali

39 The Abode will be Hell - Fire;

Transliteration

39 Fainna aljaheema hiya almawa

Pickthall

40 But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,

Yusuf Ali

40 And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires,

Transliteration

40 Waama man khafa maqama rabbihi wanaha alnnafsa AAani alhawa

41 Lo! the Garden will be his home.

Yusuf Ali

41 Their abode will be the Garden.

Transliteration

41 Fainna aljannata hiya almawa

Pickthall

42 They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port ?

Yusuf Ali

42 They ask thee about the Hour, - 'When will be its appointed time?

Transliteration

42 Yasaloonaka AAani alssaAAati ayyana mursaha

Pickthall

43 Why (ask they) ? What hast thou to tell thereof ?

Yusuf Ali

43 Wherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof?

Transliteration

43 Feema anta min thikraha

Pickthall

44 Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.

Yusuf Ali

44 With thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor.

Transliteration

44 Ila rabbika muntahaha

Pickthall

45 Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it.

Yusuf Ali

45 Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it.

Transliteration

45 Innama anta munthiru man yakhshaha

Pickthall

46 On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.

Yusuf Ali

46 The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn!

Transliteration

46 Kaannahum yawma yarawnaha lam yalbathoo illa AAashiyyatan aw duhaha
