Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created -
Khalaqa alinsana min AAalaqin
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
Iqra warabbuka alakramu
Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, -
Allathee AAallama bialqalami
He Who taught (the use of) the pen, -
AAallama alinsana ma lam yaAAlam
Taught man that which he knew not.
Kalla inna alinsana layatgha
Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,
An raahu istaghna
In that he looketh upon himself as self - sufficient.
Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa
Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).
Araayta allathee yanha
Seest thou one who forbids -
AAabdan itha salla
A votary when he (turns) to pray?
Araayta in kana AAala alhuda
Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance? -
Aw amara bialttaqwa
Or enjoins Righteousness?
Araayta in kaththaba watawalla
Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
Alam yaAAlam bianna Allaha yara
Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?
Kalla lain lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati
Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock, -
Nasiyatin kathibatin khatiatin
A lying, sinful forelock!
FalyadAAu nadiyahu
Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
SanadAAu alzzabaniyata
We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib
Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
