1 AAabasa watawalla

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. He frowned and turned away

1 The Prophet frowned and turned away

Transliteration

2 An jaahu alaAAma

Pickthall

2 Because the blind man came unto him.

Saheeh International

2 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Transliteration

3 Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

Pickthall

3 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)

Saheeh International

3 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Transliteration

4 Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

Pickthall

4 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him ?

Saheeh International

4 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Transliteration

5 Amma mani istaghna

Pickthall

5 As for him who thinketh himself independent,

Saheeh International

5 As for he who thinks himself without need,

Transliteration

6 Faanta lahu tasadda

Pickthall

6 Unto him thou payest regard.

Saheeh International

6 To him you give attention.

Transliteration

7 Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

7 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).

Saheeh International

7 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Transliteration

8 Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

Pickthall

8 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose

Saheeh International

8 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Transliteration

9 Wahuwa yakhsha

Pickthall

9 And hath fear,

Saheeh International

9 While he fears [Allah],

Transliteration

10 Faanta AAanhu talahha

Pickthall

10 From him thou art distracted.

Saheeh International

10 From him you are distracted.

Transliteration

11 Kalla innaha tathkiratun

Pickthall

11 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,

Saheeh International

11 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

Transliteration

12 Faman shaa thakarahu

Pickthall

12 So let whosoever will pay heed to it,

Saheeh International

12 So whoever wills may remember it.

Transliteration

13 Fee suhufin mukarramatin

13 On honoured leaves

Saheeh International

13 [It is recorded] in honored sheets,

14 MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

14 Exalted, purified,

Saheeh International

14 Exalted and purified,

Transliteration

15 Biaydee safaratin

15 (Set down) by scribes

Saheeh International

15 [Carried] by the hands of messenger - angels,

Transliteration

16 Kiramin bararatin

16 Noble and righteous.

Saheeh International

16 Noble and dutiful.

Transliteration

17 Qutila alinsanu ma akfarahu

17 Man is (self - )destroyed: how ungrateful!

Saheeh International

17 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

Transliteration

18 Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

18 From what thing doth He create him ?

Saheeh International

18 From what substance did He create him?

Transliteration

19 Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

Pickthall

19 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,

Saheeh International

19 From a sperm - drop He created him and destined for him;

Transliteration

20 Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

Pickthall

20 Then maketh the way easy for him,

Saheeh International

20 Then He eased the way for him;

Transliteration

21 Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

Pickthall

21 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;

Saheeh International

21 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Transliteration

22 Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

Pickthall

22 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.

Saheeh International

22 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Transliteration

23 Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

Pickthall

23 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.

Saheeh International

23 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

24 Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamihi

24 Let man consider his food:

Saheeh International

24 Then let mankind look at his food -

Transliteration

25 Anna sababna almaa sabban

Pickthall

25 How We pour water in showers

Saheeh International

25 How We poured down water in torrents,

Transliteration

26 Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqan

Pickthall

26 Then split the earth in clefts

Saheeh International

26 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

Transliteration

27 Faanbatna feeha habban

Pickthall

27 And cause the grain to grow therein

Saheeh International

27 And caused to grow within it grain

Transliteration

28 WaAAinaban waqadban

Pickthall

28 And grapes and green fodder

Saheeh International

28 And grapes and herbage

Transliteration

29 Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

Pickthall

29 And olive - trees and palm - trees

Saheeh International

29 And olive and palm trees

Transliteration

30 Wahadaiqa ghulban

Pickthall

30 And garden - closes of thick foliage

Saheeh International

30 And gardens of dense shrubbery

Transliteration

31 Wafakihatan waabban

Pickthall

31 And fruits and grasses:

Saheeh International

31 And fruit and grass -

Transliteration

32 MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

Pickthall

32 Provision for you and your cattle.

Saheeh International

32 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

Transliteration

33 Faitha jaati alssakhkhatu

33 But when the Shout cometh

Saheeh International

33 But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Transliteration

34 Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

34 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother

Saheeh International

34 On the Day a man will flee from his brother

Transliteration

35 Waommihi waabeehi

Pickthall

35 And his mother and his father

Saheeh International

35 And his mother and his father

Transliteration

36 Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

Pickthall

36 And his wife and his children,

Saheeh International

36 And his wife and his children,

Transliteration

37 Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneehi

Pickthall

37 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).

Saheeh International

37 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Transliteration

38 Wujoohun yawmaithin musfiratun

Pickthall

38 On that day faces will be bright as dawn,

Saheeh International

38 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Transliteration

39 Dahikatun mustabshiratun

Pickthall

39 Laughing, rejoicing at good news;

Saheeh International

39 Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

Transliteration

40 Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabaratun

Pickthall

40 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,

Saheeh International

40 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

Transliteration

41 Tarhaquha qataratun

41 Veiled in darkness,

Saheeh International

41 Blackness will cover them.

Transliteration

42 Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu

42 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.

42 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
