1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. By the sun and its brightness.

Shakir

1 I swear by the sun and its brilliance,

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. By the sun and his brightness,

2 By the moon as it follows it (the sun).

Shakir

2 And the moon when it follows the sun,

2 And the moon when she followeth him,

3 By the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness.

3 And the day when it shows it,

3 And the day when it revealeth him,

4 By the night as it conceals it (the sun).

4 And the night when it draws a veil over it,

4 And the night when it enshroudeth him,

5 By the heaven and Him Who built it.

5 And the heaven and Him Who made it,

6 By the earth and Him Who spread it.

6 And the earth and Him Who extended it,

7 By Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul), and Him Who perfected him in proportion;

7 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect,

7 And a soul and Him Who perfected it

8 Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him.

Shakir

8 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it;

8 And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it.

9 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).

9 He will indeed be successful who purifies it,

9 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,

10 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).

10 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it.

10 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.

11 Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin).

11 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy,

11 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride,

12 When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).

Shakir

12 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with

12 When the basest of them broke forth

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

13 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih عليه السلام] said to them: "Be cautious! (Fear the evil end). That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!"

13 So Allah's apostle said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she - camel, and (give) her (to) drink.

Pickthall

13 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she - camel of Allah, so let her drink!

14 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!

14 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground).

14 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings).

15 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.

15 And He fears not its consequence.

15 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events).
