Al Shu'araa

1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Ta-Sin-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.]

1 Ta, Seen, Meem.

1 Ta. Sin. Mim.

2 These are the Verses of the manifest Book [(this Qur'an), which was promised by Allah in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), makes things clear].

2 These are the verses of the clear Book.

2 These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

3 It may be that you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your Risalah (Messengership) i.e. in your Message of Islamic Monotheism].

3 Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.

3 It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.

4 If We will, We could send down to them from the heaven a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

4 If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.

4 If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

5 And never comes there unto them a Reminder as a recent revelation from the Most Gracious (Allah), but they turn away therefrom.

5 And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.

5 But there comes not to them a newly - revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.

6 So they have indeed denied (the truth - this Qur'an), then the news of what they mocked at will come to them.

6 For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.

6 They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!

7 Do they not observe the earth - how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?

7 Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?

7 Do they not look at the earth, - how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?

8 Verily, in this is an Ayah (proof or sign), yet most of them (polytheists, pagans who do not believe in Resurrection) are not believers.

8 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

8 Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

9 And verily your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

9 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

9 And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

10 And (remember) when your Lord called Musa (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) -

10 And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -

10 Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity, -

11 "The people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh): Will they not fear Allah and become righteous?"

11 The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?"

11 "The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"

12 He said: "My Lord! Verily, I fear that they will belie me,

12 He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me

12 He said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:

13 "And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Harun (Aaron) (to come along with me).

13 And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.

13 "My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.

14 "And they have a charge of crime against me, and I fear they will kill me."

14 And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."

14 "And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."

15 (Allah) said: "Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Verily We shall be with you, listening.

15 [Allah] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.

15 Allah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).

16 "And go both of you to Fir'aun (Pharaoh), and say: 'We are the Messengers of the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists),

16 Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds,

16 "So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;

17 "So allow the Children of Israel to go with us.' "

17 [Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"

17 "'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"

18 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said [to Musa (Moses)]: "Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did dwell many years of your life with us.

18 [Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

18 (Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

19 "And you did your deed, which you did (i.e. the crime of killing a man) while you were one of the ingrates."

19 And [then] you did your deed which you did, and you were of the ungrateful."

19 "And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

20 Musa (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was ignorant (as regards my Lord and His Message).

20 [Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray.

20 Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.

21 "So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukm (i.e. religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and made me one of the Messengers.

21 So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and prophethood and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.

21 "So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.

22 "And this is the past favour with which you reproach me: that you have enslaved the Children of Israel."

22 And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

22 "And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me, - that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

23 Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "And what is the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)?"

23 Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"

23 Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

24 [Musa (Moses)] said: "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty."

24 [Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."

24 (Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between, - if ye want to be quite sure."

25 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to those around: "Do you not hear (what he says)?"

25 [Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"

25 (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

26 [Musa (Moses)] said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!"

26 [Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."

26 (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

27 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!"

27 [Pharaoh] said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

27 (Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

28 [Musa (Moses)] said: "Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!"

28 [Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."

28 (Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

29 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "If you choose an ilah (god) other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners."

29 [Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."

29 (Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

30 [Musa (Moses)] said: "Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?"

30 [Moses] said, "Even if I brought you proof manifest?"

30 (Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

31 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

31 [Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."

31 (Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"

32 So [Musa (Moses)] threw his stick, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest.

32 So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.

32 So (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

33 And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

33 And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.

33 And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

34 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.

34 [Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

34 (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well - versed:

35 "He wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery: what is it then that you command?"

35 He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"

35 "His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"

36 They said: "Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities;

36 They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

36 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect -

37 "To bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer."

37 Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."

37 "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well - versed."

38 So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed.

38 So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well - known day.

38 So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well - known,

39 And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble?

39 And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate

39 And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled? -

40 "That we may follow the sorcerers [who were on Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) religion of disbelief] if they are the winners."

40 That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"

40 "That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"

41 So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir'aun (Pharaoh): "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?"

41 And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"

41 So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?

42 He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself)."

42 He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

42 He said: "Yea, (and more), - for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."

43 Musa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!"

43 Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

43 Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"

44 So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

44 So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

44 So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"

45 Then Musa (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all that they falsely showed!

45 Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

45 Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!

46 And the sorcerers fell down prostrate.

46 So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah].

46 Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,

47 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

47 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

47 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

48 "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)."

48 The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

48 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

49 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."

49 [Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

49 Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"

50 They said: "No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allah) we are to return.

50 They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

50 They said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!

51 "Verily we really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Musa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allah]."

51 Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

51 "Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!"

52 And We revealed to Musa (Moses), saying: "Depart by night with My slaves, verily you will be pursued."

52 And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

52 By inspiration we told Moses: "Travel by night with my servants; for surely ye shall be pursued."

53 Then Fir'aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities.

53 Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers

53 Then Pharaoh sent heralds to (all) the Cities,

54 (Saying): "Verily these indeed are but a small band.

54 [And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

54 (Saying): "These (Israelites) are but a small band,

55 "And verily, they have done what has enraged us.

55 And indeed, they are enraging us,

55 "And they are raging furiously against us;

56 "But we are a host all assembled, amply fore-warned."

56 And indeed, we are a cautious society... "

56 "But we are a multitude amply fore - warned."

57 So, We expelled them from gardens and springs,

57 So We removed them from gardens and springs

57 So We expelled them from gardens, springs,

58 Treasures, and every kind of honourable place.

58 And treasures and honorable station -

58 Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;

59 Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh's people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

59 Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

59 Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things.

60 So they pursued them at sunrise.

61 And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

61 And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

61 And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Moses said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

62 [Musa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily with me is my Lord. He will guide me."

62 [Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

62 (Moses) said: "By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!"

63 Then We revealed to Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like huge mountain.

63 Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

63 Then We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

64 Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place.

64 And We advanced thereto the pursuers.

64 And We made the other party approach thither.

65 And We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him.

65 And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

65 We delivered Moses and all who were with him;

66 Then We drowned the others.

66 Then We drowned the others.

66 But We drowned the others.

67 Verily in this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers.

67 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

67 Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

68 And verily your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

68 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

68 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

69 And recite to them the story of Ibrahim (Abraham).

69 And recite to them the news of Abraham,

69 And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham's story.

70 When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?"

70 When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

70 Behold, he said to his father and his people: "What worship ye?"

71 They said: "We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted."

71 They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

71 They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them."

72 He said: "Do they hear you, when you call on (them)?

72 He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

72 He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?"

73 "Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?"

73 Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

73 "Or do you good or harm?"

74 They said: "(Nay) but we found our fathers doing so."

74 They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

74 They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

75 He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping -

75 He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

75 He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping, -

76 "You and your ancient fathers?

76 You and your ancient forefathers?

76 "Ye and your fathers before you? -

77 "Verily they are enemies to me, save the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists),

77 Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,

77 "For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;

78 "Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me.

78 Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

78 "Who created me, and it is He Who guides me;

79 "And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink.

79 And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

79 "Who gives me food and drink,

80 "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.

80 And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

80 "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me;

81 "And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again).

81 And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

81 "Who will cause me to die, and then to life (again);

82 "And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection).

82 And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."

82 "And who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the day of Judgment.

83 My Lord! Bestow Hukm (religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) on me, and join me with the righteous.

83 [And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

83 "O my Lord! bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous;

84 And grant me an honourable mention in later generations.

84 And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.

84 "Grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations);

85 And make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight.

85 And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

85 "Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss;

86 And forgive my father, verily he is of the erring.

86 And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

86 "Forgive my father, for that he is among those astray;

87 And disgrace me not on the Day when (all the creatures) will be resurrected.

87 And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

87 "And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up; -

88 The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,

88 The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

88 "The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,

89 Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)]."

89 But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."

89 "But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart;

90 And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqun (the pious - See V.2:2).

90 And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

90 "To the righteous, the Garden will be brought near,

91 And the (Hell) Fire will be placed in full view of the erring.

91 And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

91 "And to those straying in Evil, the Fire will be placed in full view;

92 And it will be said to them: "Where are those (the false gods whom you used to set up as rivals with Allah) that you used to worship.

92 And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

92 "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped -

93 "Instead of Allah? Can they help you or (even) help themselves?"

93 Other than Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?"

93 "'Besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?'

94 Then they will be thrown on their faces into the (Fire), they and the Ghawun (devils, and those who were in error).

94 So they will be overturned into Hellfire, they and the deviators

94 "Then they will be thrown headlong into the (Fire), - they and those straying in Evil,

95 And the whole hosts of Iblis (Satan) together.

95 And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

95 "And the whole hosts of Iblis together.

96 They will say while contending therein,

96 They will say while they dispute therein,

96 "They will say there in their mutual bickerings:

97 By Allah, we were truly in a manifest error,

97 "By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error

97 "'By Allah, we were truly in an error manifest,

98 When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists);

98 When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

98 "'When we held you as equals with the Lord of the Worlds;

99 And none has brought us into error except the Mujrimun [Iblis (Satan) and those of human beings who commit crimes, murderers, polytheists, oppressors].

99 And no one misguided us except the criminals.

99 "'And our seducers were only those who were steeped in guilt.

100 Now we have no intercessors,

100 So now we have no intercessors

100 "'Now, then, we have none to intercede (for us),

101 Nor a close friend (to help us).

101 And not a devoted friend.

101 "'Nor a single friend to feel (for us).

102 (Alas!) If we only had a chance to return (to the world), we shall truly be among the believers!

102 Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers... "

102 "'Now if we only had a chance of return we shall truly be of those who believe!'"

103 Verily in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

103 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

103 Verily in this is a Sign but most of them do not believe.

104 And verily, your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

104 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

104 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

105 The people of Nuh (Noah) belied the Messengers.

105 The people of Noah denied the messengers

105 The people of Noah rejected the messengers.

106 When their brother Nuh (Noah) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

106 When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?

106 Behold, their brother Noah said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

107 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

107 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

107 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust:

108 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

108 So fear Allah and obey me.

108 "So fear Allah, and obey me.

109 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

109 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

109 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds:

110 "So keep your duty to Allah, fear Him and obey me."

110 So fear Allah and obey me."

110 "So fear Allah, and obey me."

111 They said: "Shall we believe in you, when the meanest (of the people) follow you?"

111 They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"

111 They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow thee?"

112 He said: "And what knowledge have I of what they used to do?

112 He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?

112 He said: "And what do I know as to what they do?

113 "Their account is only with my Lord, if you could (but) know.

113 Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.

113 "Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand.

114 "And I am not going to drive away the believers.

114 And I am not one to drive away the believers.

114 "I am not one to drive away those who believe.

115 I am only a plain warner."

115 I am only a clear warner."

115 "I am sent only to warn plainly in public."

116 They said: "If you cease not, O Nuh (Noah) you will surely be among those stoned (to death)."

116 They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."

116 They said: "If thou desist not, O Noah! thou shalt be stoned (to death)."

117 He said: "My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me.

117 He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.

117 He said: "O my Lord! truly my people have rejected me.

118 Therefore judge You between me and them, and save me and those of the believers who are with me."

118 Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."

118 "Judge Thou, then, between me and them openly, and deliver me and those of the Believers who are with me."

119 And We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

119 So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

119 So We delivered him and those with him, in the Ark filled (with all creatures).

120 Then We drowned the rest (disbelievers) thereafter.

120 Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.

120 Thereafter We drowned those who remained behind.

121 Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

121 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

121 Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

122 And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

122 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

122 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

123 'Ad (people) belied the Messengers.

123 The 'Ad (people) rejected the messengers.

124 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

124 Behold, their brother Hud said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

125 "Verily I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

125 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

125 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust:

126 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

126 So fear Allah and obey me.

126 "So fear Allah and obey me.

127 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exists).

127 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

127 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

128 "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them?

128 Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves,

128 "Do ye build a landmark on every high place to amuse yourselves?

129 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever.

129 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?

129 "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)?

130 "And when you seize (somebody), seize you (him) as tyrants?

130 And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.

130 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power?

131 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

131 So fear Allah and obey me.

131 "Now fear Allah, and obey me.

132 "And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know.

132 And fear He who provided you with that which you know,

132 "Yea, fear Him Who has bestowed on you freely all that ye know.

133 "He has aided you with cattle and children.

133 Provided you with grazing livestock and children

133 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons, -

134 "And gardens and springs.

134 And gardens and springs.

134 "And Gardens and Springs.

135 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day."

135 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."

135 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day."

136 They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach.

136 They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.

136 They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers!

137 "This is no other than the false tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari]

137 This is not but the custom of the former peoples,

137 "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients,

138 "And we are not going to be punished."

138 And we are not to be punished."

138 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!"

139 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

139 And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

139 So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

140 And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

140 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

140 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

141 Thamud (people) belied the Messengers.

142 When their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

142 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)?

143 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

143 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

143 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.

144 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

144 So fear Allah and obey me.

144 "So fear Allah, and obey me.

145 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

145 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

145 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

146 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here?

146 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],

146 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? -

147 "In gardens and springs.

147 Within gardens and springs

147 "Gardens and Springs,

148 And green crops (fields) and date-palms with soft spadix.

148 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?

148 "And corn - fields and date - palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)?

149 "And you hew out in the mountains, houses with great skill.

149 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.

149 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill.

150 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

150 So fear Allah and obey me.

150 "But fear Allah and obey me;

151 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs: leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners],

151 And do not obey the order of the transgressors,

151 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant, -

152 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not."

152 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."

152 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)."

153 They said: "You are only of those bewitched!

153 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

153 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

154 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful."

154 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."

154 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!"

155 He said: "Here is a she-camel: it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known.

155 He said, "This is a she - camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.

155 He said: "Here is a she - camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed.

156 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day should seize you."

156 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."

156 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you."

157 But they killed her, and then they became regretful.

157 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.

157 But they ham - strung her: then did they become full of regrets.

158 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

158 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

158 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

159 And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

159 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

159 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

160 The people of Lut (Lot) (-who dwelt in the town of Sodom in Palestine) belied the Messengers.

160 The people of Lot denied the messengers

160 The people of Lut rejected the messengers.

161 When their brother Lut (Lot) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

161 When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?

161 Behold, their brother Lut said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

162 "Verily I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

162 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

162 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.

163 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

163 So fear Allah and obey me.

163 "So fear Allah and obey me.

164 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

164 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

164 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the lord of the Worlds.

165 "Go you in unto the males of the 'Alamin (mankind),

165 Do you approach males among the worlds

165 "Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males,

166 "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your wives? Nay, you are a trespassing people!"

166 And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."

166 "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)!"

167 They said: "If you cease not O Lut (Lot)! verily, you will be one of those who are driven out!"

167 They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."

167 They said: "If thou desist not, O Lut! thou wilt assuredly be cast out!"

168 He said: "I am, indeed, of those who disapprove with severe anger and fury your (this evil) action (of sodomy).

168 He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it].

168 He said: "I do detest your doings."

169 "My Lord! Save me and my family from what they do."

169 My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do."

169 "O my Lord! deliver me and my family from such things as they do!"

170 So We saved him and his family, all,

170 So We saved him and his family, all,

170 So We delivered him and his family, - all

171 Except an old woman (his wife) among those who remained behind.

171 Except an old woman among those who remained behind.

171 Except an old woman who lingered behind.

172 Then afterward We destroyed the others.

172 Then We destroyed the others.

172 But the rest We destroyed utterly.

173 And We rained on them a rain (of torment). And how evil was the rain of those who had been warned!

173 And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.

173 We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)!

174 Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

174 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

174 Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

175 And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

175 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

176 The dwellers of Al-Aikah [near Madyan (Midian)] belied the Messengers.

176 The companions of the thicket denied the messengers

176 The Companions of the Wood rejected the messengers.

177 When Shu'aib said to them: "Will you not fear Allah (and obey Him)?

177 When Shu'ayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?

177 Behold, Shu'aib said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

178 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

178 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

178 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.

179 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

179 So fear Allah and obey me.

179 "So fear Allah and obey me.

180 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

180 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

180 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

181 "Give full measure, and cause no loss (to others).

181 Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.

181 "Give just measure, and cause no loss (to others by fraud).

182 "And weigh with the true and straight balance.

182 And weigh with an even balance.

182 "And weigh with scales true and upright.

183 "And defraud not people by reducing their things, nor do evil, making corruption and mischief in the land.

183 And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.

183 "And withhold not things justly due to men, nor do evil in the land, working mischief.

184 "And fear Him Who created you and the generations of the men of old."

184 And fear He who created you and the former creation."

184 "And fear Him Who created you and (who created) the generations before (you)"

185 They said: "You are only one of those bewitched!

185 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

185 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

186 "You are but a human being like us and verily, we think that you are one of the liars!

186 You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.

186 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!

187 "So cause a piece of the heaven to fall on us, if you are of the truthful!"

187 So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

187 "Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"

188 He said: "My Lord is the Best Knower of what you do."

188 He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."

188 He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."

189 But they belied him, so the torment of the day of shadow (a gloomy cloud) seized them. Indeed that was the torment of a Great Day.

189 And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.

189 But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.

190 Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

190 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

190 Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

191 And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

191 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

191 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

192 And truly, this (the Qur'an) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists),

192 And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

192 Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:

193 Which the trustworthy Ruh [Jibril (Gabriel)] has brought down

193 The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down

193 With it came down the spirit of Faith and Truth -

194 Upon your heart (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) that you may be (one) of the warners,

194 Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners -

194 To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish.

195 In the plain Arabic language.

195 In a clear Arabic language.

195 In the perspicuous Arabic tongue.

196 And verily, it (the Qur'an, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) is (announced) in the Scriptures [i.e. the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] of former people.

196 And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.

196 Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples.

197 Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like 'Abdullah bin Salam رضي الله عنه who embraced Islam) of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

197 And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?

197 Is it not a Sign to them that the Learned of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

198 And if We had revealed it (this Qur'an) unto any of the non-Arabs,

198 And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners

198 Had We revealed it to any of the non - Arabs,

199 And he had recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it.

199 And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.

199 And had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.

200 Thus have We caused it (the denial of the Qur'an) to enter the hearts of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners).

200 Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.

200 Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners.

201 They will not believe in it until they see the painful torment.

201 They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

201 They will not believe in it until they see the grievous Penalty;

202 It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not.

202 And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

202 But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;

203 Then they will say: "Can we be respited?"

203 And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

203 Then they will say: "Shall we be respited?"

204 Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on?

204 So for Our punishment are they impatient?

204 Do they then ask for Our Penalty to be hastened on?

205 Tell Me, (even) if We do let them enjoy for years,

205 Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

205 Seest thou? If We do let them enjoy (this life) for a few years,

206 And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised,

206 And then there came to them that which they were promised?

206 Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!

207 All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them.

207 They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

207 It will profit them not that they enjoyed (this life)!

208 And never did We destroy a township but it had its warners

208 And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

208 Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners -

209 By way of reminder, and We have never been unjust.

209 As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

209 By way of reminder; and We never are unjust.

210 And it is not the Shayatin (devils) who have brought it (this Qur'an) down.

210 And the devils have not brought the revelation down.

210 No evil ones have brought down this (Revelation):

211 Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it).

211 It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

211 It would neither suit them nor would they be able (to produce it).

212 Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it.

212 Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.

212 Indeed they have been removed far from even (a chance of) hearing it.

213 So invoke not with Allah another ilah (god) lest you should be among those who receive punishment.

213 So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

213 So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.

214 And warn your tribe (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of near kindred.

214 And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred.

214 And admonish thy nearest kinsmen,

215 And be kind and humble to the believers who follow you.

215 And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers.

215 And lower thy wing to the Believers who follow thee.

216 Then if they disobey you, say: "I am innocent of what you do."

216 And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."

216 Then if they disobey thee, say: "I am free (of responsibility) for what ye do!"

217 And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful,

217 And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

217 And put thy trust on the Exalted in Might, the Merciful, -

218 Who sees you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) when you stand up (alone at night for Tahajjud prayers).

218 Who sees you when you arise

218 Who seeth thee standing forth (in prayer),

219 And your movements among those who fall prostrate (to Allah in the five compulsory congregational prayers).

219 And your movement among those who prostrate.

219 And thy movements among those who prostrate themselves,

220 Verily He, only He, is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

220 Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

220 For it is He Who heareth and knoweth all things.

221 Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the Shayatin (devils) descend?

221 Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

221 Shall I inform you, (O people!), on whom it is that the evil ones descend?

222 They descend on every lying, sinful person.

222 They descend upon every sinful liar.

222 They descend on every lying, wicked person,

223 Who gives ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the Unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars.

223 They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars.

223 (Into whose ears) they pour hearsay vanities, and most of them are liars.

224 As for the poets, the erring ones follow them,

224 And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;

224 And the Poets, - It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:

225 See you not that they speak about every subject (praising people - right or wrong) in their poetry?

225 Do you not see that in every valley they roam

225 Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley? -

226 And that they say what they do not do.

226 And that they say what they do not do? -

226 And that they say what they practise not? -

227 Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged [by replying back in poetry to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims)]. And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.

227 Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

227 Except those who believe, work righteousness, engage much in the remembrance of Allah, and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked. And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take!
