1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. When the sun is overthrown,

1 When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

1 Itha alshshamsu kuwwirat

2 And when the stars fall,

2 And when the stars fall, dispersing,

2 Waitha alnnujoomu inkadarat

3 And when the hills are moved,

3 And when the mountains are removed

3 Waitha aljibalu suyyirat

4 And when the camels big with young are abandoned,

4 And when full - term she - camels are neglected

4 Waitha alAAisharu AAuttilat

5 And when the wild beasts are herded together,

5 And when the wild beasts are gathered

5 Waitha alwuhooshu hushirat

6 And when the seas rise,

6 And when the seas are filled with flame

6 Waitha albiharu sujjirat

7 And when souls are reunited,

7 And when the souls are paired

7 Waitha alnnufoosu zuwwijat

8 And when the girl - child that was buried alive is asked

8 And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

8 Waitha almawoodatu suilat

9 For what sin she was slain,

9 For what sin she was killed

9 Biayyi thanbin qutilat

10 And when the pages are laid open,

10 And when the pages are made public

10 Waitha alssuhufu nushirat

11 And when the sky is torn away,

11 And when the sky is stripped away

11 Waitha alssamao kushitat

12 And when hell is lighted,

12 And when Hellfire is set ablaze

12 Waitha aljaheemu suAAAAirat

13 And when the Garden is brought nigh,

13 And when Paradise is brought near,

13 Waitha aljannatu ozlifat

14 (Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.

14 A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

14 AAalimat nafsun ma ahdarat

15 Oh, but I call to witness the planets,

15 So I swear by the retreating stars -

15 Fala oqsimu bialkhunnasi

16 The stars which rise and set,

16 Those that run [their courses] and disappear -

16 Aljawari alkunnasi

17 And the close of night,

17 And by the night as it closes in

17 Waallayli itha AAasAAasa

18 And the breath of morning

18 And by the dawn when it breathes

18 Waalssubhi itha tanaffasa

19 That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger,

19 [That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger

19 Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareemin

20 Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne,

20 [Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

20 Thee quwwatin AAinda thee alAAarshi makeenin

21 (One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy;

21 Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

21 MutaAAin thamma ameenin

22 And your comrade is not mad.

22 And your companion is not [at all] mad.

22 Wama sahibukum bimajnoonin

23 Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.

23 And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.

23 Walaqad raahu bialofuqi almubeeni

24 And he is not avid of the Unseen.

24 And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

24 Wama huwa AAala alghaybi bidaneenin

25 Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.

25 And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

25 Wama huwa biqawli shaytanin rajeemin

26 Whither then go ye ?

26 So where are you going?

26 Faayna tathhaboona

27 This is naught else than a reminder unto creation,

27 It is not except a reminder to the worlds

27 In huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena

28 Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.

28 For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

28 Liman shaa minkum an yastaqeema

29 And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.

29 And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds.

29 Wama tashaoona illa an yashaa Allahu rabbu alAAalameena
