1 Read in the name of your Lord Who created.

1 Recite in the name of your Lord who created -

1 Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa

2 He created man from a clot.

2 Created man from a clinging substance.

2 Khalaqa alinsana min AAalaqin

3 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable,

3 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

3 Iqra warabbuka alakramu

4 Who taught (to write) with the pen

4 Who taught by the pen -

4 Allathee AAallama bialqalami

5 Taught man what he knew not.

5 Taught man that which he knew not.

5 AAallama alinsana ma lam yaAAlam

6 Nay! man is most surely inordinate,

6 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

6 Kalla inna alinsana layatgha

7 Because he sees himself free from want.

7 Because he sees himself self - sufficient.

7 An raahu istaghna

8 Surely to your Lord is the return.

8 Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

8 Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa

9 Have you seen him who forbids

9 Have you seen the one who forbids

9 Araayta allathee yanha

10 A servant when he prays?

10 A servant when he prays?

10 AAabdan itha salla

11 Have you considered if he were on the right way,

11 Have you seen if he is upon guidance

11 Araayta in kana AAala alhuda

12 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)?

12 Or enjoins righteousness?

12 Aw amara bialttaqwa

13 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back?

13 Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

13 Araayta in kaththaba watawalla

14 Does he not know that Allah does see?

14 Does he not know that Allah sees?

14 Alam yaAAlam bianna Allaha yara

15 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead,

15 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -

15 Kalla lain lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati

16 A lying, sinful forehead.

16 A lying, sinning forelock.

16 Nasiyatin kathibatin khatiatin

17 Then let him summon his council,

17 Then let him call his associates;

17 FalyadAAu nadiyahu

18 We too would summon the braves of the army.

18 We will call the angels of Hell.

18 SanadAAu alzzabaniyata

19 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah).

19 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
