الـمّـدّثّـر

1 O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!

1 Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru

1 O you who covers himself [with a garment],

2 Arise and deliver thy warning!

2 Qum faanthir

2 Arise and warn

3 And thy Lord do thou magnify!

3 Warabbaka fakabbir

3 And your Lord glorify

4 And thy garments keep free from stain!

4 Wathiyabaka fatahhir

4 And your clothing purify

5 And all abomination shun!

5 Waalrrujza faohjur

5 And uncleanliness avoid

6 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!

6 Wala tamnun tastakthiru

6 And do not confer favor to acquire more

7 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!

7 Walirabbika faisbir

7 But for your Lord be patient.

8 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,

8 Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori

8 And when the trumpet is blown,

9 That will be - that Day - a Day of Distress, -

9 Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun

9 That Day will be a difficult day

10 Far from easy for those without Faith.

10 AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin

10 For the disbelievers - not easy.

11 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone! -

11 Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

11 Leave Me with the one I created alone

12 To whom I granted resources in abundance,

12 WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan

12 And to whom I granted extensive wealth

13 And sons to be by his side! -

13 Wabaneena shuhoodan

13 And children present [with him]

14 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!

14 Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan

14 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

15 Yet is he greedy - that I should add (yet more); -

15 Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda

15 Then he desires that I should add more.

16 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!

16 Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan

16 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

17 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

17 Saorhiquhu saAAoodan

17 I will cover him with arduous torment.

18 For he thought and he plotted; -

18 Innahu fakkara waqaddara

18 Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

19 And woe to him! How he plotted! -

19 Faqutila kayfa qaddara

19 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

20 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted! -

20 Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara

20 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

21 Then he looked round;

21 Thumma nathara

21 Then he considered [again];

22 Then he frowned and he scowled;

22 Thumma AAabasa wabasara

22 Then he frowned and scowled;

23 Then he turned back and was haughty;

23 Thumma adbara waistakbara

23 Then he turned back and was arrogant

24 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;

24 Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu

24 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

25 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"

25 In hatha illa qawlu albashari

25 This is not but the word of a human being."

26 Soon will I cast him into Hell - Fire!

26 Saosleehi saqara

26 I will drive him into Saqar.

27 And what will explain to thee what Hell - Fire is?

27 Wama adraka ma saqaru

27 And what can make you know what is Saqar?

28 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone! -

28 La tubqee wala tatharu

28 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

29 Darkening and changing the colour of man!

29 Lawwahatun lilbashari

29 Blackening the skins.

30 Over it are Nineteen.

30 AAalayha tisAAata AAashara

30 Over it are nineteen [angels].

31 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers, - in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith, - and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.

31 Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

31 And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.

32 Nay, verily: By the Moon,

32 Kalla waalqamari

32 No! By the moon

33 And by the Night as it retreateth,

33 Waallayli ith adbara

33 And [by] the night when it departs

34 And by the Dawn as it shineth forth, -

34 Waalssubhi itha asfara

34 And [by] the morning when it brightens,

35 This is but one of the mighty (portents),

35 Innaha laihda alkubari

35 Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]

36 A warning to mankind, -

36 Natheeran lilbashari

36 As a warning to humanity -

37 To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind; -

37 Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara

37 To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

38 Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.

38 Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun

38 Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained

39 Except the Companions of the Right Hand.

39 Illa ashaba alyameeni

39 Except the companions of the right,

40 (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other,

40 Fee jannatin yatasaaloona

40 [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

41 And (ask) of the Sinners:

41 AAani almujrimeena

41 About the criminals,

42 "What led you into Hell Fire?"

42 Ma salakakum fee saqara

42 [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

43 They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;

43 Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena

43 They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

44 "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;

44 Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena

44 Nor did we used to feed the poor.

45 "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;

45 Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena

45 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

46 "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

46 Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni

46 And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

47 "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."

47 Hatta atana alyaqeenu

47 Until there came to us the certainty."

48 Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.

48 Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena

48 So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

49 Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition? -

49 Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena

49 Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

50 As if they were affrighted asses,

50 Kaannahum humurun mustanfiratun

50 As if they were alarmed donkeys

51 Fleeing from a lion!

51 Farrat min qaswaratin

51 Fleeing from a lion?

52 Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!

52 Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yuta suhufan munashsharatan

52 Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.

53 By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,

53 Kalla bal la yakhafoona alakhirata

53 No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

54 Nay, this surely is an admonition:

54 Kalla innahu tathkiratun

54 No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

55 Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!

55 Faman shaa thakarahu

55 Then whoever wills will remember it.

56 But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.

56 Wama yathkuroona illa an yashaa Allahu huwa ahlu alttaqwa waahlu almaghfirati

56 And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
