Al Fajr

1 By the dawn

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. By the Dawn

1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. By the dawn;

2 And [by] ten nights

2 And ten nights,

2 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah) ,

3 And [by] the even [number] and the odd

3 And the Even and the Odd,

3 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah).

4 And [by] the night when it passes,

4 And the night when it departeth,

4 And by the night when it departs.

5 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

5 There surely is an oath for thinking man.

5 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs)!

6 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -

6 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,

6 Saw you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) not how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)

7 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

7 With many - columned Iram,

7 Of Iram (who were very tall) like (lofty) pillars,

8 The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

8 The like of which was not created in the lands;

8 The like of which were not created in the land?

9 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

9 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;

9 And (with) Thamud (people), who hewed out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?

10 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -

10 And with Pharaoh, firm of might,

10 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh) who had the stakes (to torture men by binding them to the stakes)?

11 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands

11 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,

11 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah).

12 And increased therein the corruption.

12 And multiplied iniquity therein ?

12 And made therein much mischief.

13 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

13 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.

13 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.

14 Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

14 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.

14 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them).

15 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

15 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.

15 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and bounties, then he says (in exultation): "My Lord has honoured me."

16 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

16 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.

16 But when He tries him by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!"

17 No! But you do not honor the orphan

17 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan

17 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!

18 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

18 And urge not on the feeding of the poor.

18 And urge not one another on the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor)!

19 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

19 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.

19 And you devour the inheritance all with greed.

20 And you love wealth with immense love.

20 And love wealth with abounding love.

20 And you love wealth with much love.

21 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed -

21 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,

21 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder.

22 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

22 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,

22 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows.

23 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?

23 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him) ?

23 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him?

24 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."

24 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!

24 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!"

25 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

25 None punisheth as He will punish on that day!

25 So on that Day none will punish as He will punish.

26 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

26 None bindeth as He then will bind.

26 And none will bind (the wicked, disbelievers and polytheists) as He will bind.

27 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

27 But ah! thou soul at peace!

27 (It will be said to the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

28 Return to your Lord, well - pleased and pleasing [to Him],

28 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!

28 "Come back to your Lord well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing (unto Him)!

29 And enter among My [righteous] servants

29 Enter thou among My bondmen!

29 "Enter you then among My (honoured) slaves,

30 And enter My Paradise."

30 Enter thou My Garden!

30 "And enter you My Paradise!"
