Saheeh International

1 About what are they asking one another?

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Whereof do they question one another ?

1 Concerning what are they disputing?

Saheeh International

2 About the great news -

2 (It is) of the awful tidings,

Yusuf Ali

2 Concerning the Great News,

Saheeh International

3 That over which they are in disagreement.

3 Concerning which they are in disagreement.

Yusuf Ali

3 About which they cannot agree.

Saheeh International

4 No! They are going to know.

Pickthall

4 Nay, but they will come to know!

Yusuf Ali

4 Verily, they shall soon (come to) know!

Saheeh International

5 Then, no! They are going to know.

Pickthall

5 Nay, again, but they will come to know!

Yusuf Ali

5 Verily, verily they shall soon (come to) know!

Saheeh International

6 Have We not made the earth a resting place?

6 Have We not made the earth an expanse,

Yusuf Ali

6 Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse,

Saheeh International

7 And the mountains as stakes?

Pickthall

7 And the high hills bulwarks ?

Yusuf Ali

7 And the mountains as pegs?

Saheeh International

8 And We created you in pairs

Pickthall

8 And We have created you in pairs,

Yusuf Ali

8 And (have We not) created you in pairs,

Saheeh International

9 And made your sleep [a means for] rest

Pickthall

9 And have appointed your sleep for repose,

Yusuf Ali

9 And made your sleep for rest,

Saheeh International

10 And made the night as clothing

Pickthall

10 And have appointed the night as a cloak,

Yusuf Ali

10 And made the night as a covering,

Saheeh International

11 And made the day for livelihood

Pickthall

11 And have appointed the day for livelihood.

Yusuf Ali

11 And made the day as a means of subsistence?

Saheeh International

12 And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]

Pickthall

12 And We have built above you seven strong (heavens),

Yusuf Ali

12 And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments,

Saheeh International

13 And made [therein] a burning lamp

Pickthall

13 And have appointed a dazzling lamp,

Yusuf Ali

13 And placed (therein) a Light of Splendour?

Saheeh International

14 And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water

Pickthall

14 And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water,

Yusuf Ali

14 And do We not send down from the clouds water in abundance,

Saheeh International

15 That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation

Pickthall

15 Thereby to produce grain and plant,

Yusuf Ali

15 That We may produce therewith corn and vegetables,

Saheeh International

16 And gardens of entwined growth.

Pickthall

16 And gardens of thick foliage.

Yusuf Ali

16 And gardens of luxurious growth?

Saheeh International

17 Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

17 Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time,

Yusuf Ali

17 Verily the Day of Sorting out is a thing appointed,

Saheeh International

18 The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

Pickthall

18 A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes,

Yusuf Ali

18 The Day that the Trumpet shall be sounded, and ye shall come forth in crowds;

Saheeh International

19 And the heaven is opened and will become gateways

Pickthall

19 And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates,

Yusuf Ali

19 And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors,

Saheeh International

20 And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

Pickthall

20 And the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage.

Yusuf Ali

20 And the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage.

Saheeh International

21 Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

Pickthall

21 Lo! hell lurketh in ambush,

Yusuf Ali

21 Truly Hell is as a place of ambush,

Saheeh International

22 For the transgressors, a place of return,

Pickthall

22 A home for the rebellious.

Yusuf Ali

22 For the transgressors a place of destination:

Saheeh International

23 In which they will remain for ages [unending].

Pickthall

23 They will abide therein for ages.

Yusuf Ali

23 They will dwell therein for ages.

Saheeh International

24 They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink

Pickthall

24 Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink

Yusuf Ali

24 Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink,

Saheeh International

25 Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

Pickthall

25 Save boiling water and a paralysing cold:

Yusuf Ali

25 Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold,

Saheeh International

26 An appropriate recompense.

Pickthall

26 Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds).

Yusuf Ali

26 A fitting recompense (for them).

Saheeh International

27 Indeed, they were not expecting an account

Pickthall

27 For lo! they looked not for a reckoning;

Yusuf Ali

27 For that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds),

Saheeh International

28 And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

Pickthall

28 They called Our revelations false with strong denial.

Yusuf Ali

28 But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false.

Saheeh International

29 But all things We have enumerated in writing.

Pickthall

29 Everything have We recorded in a Book.

Yusuf Ali

29 And all things have We preserved on record.

Saheeh International

30 "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."

Pickthall

30 So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.

Yusuf Ali

30 "So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment."

Saheeh International

31 Indeed, for the righteous is attainment -

Pickthall

31 Lo! for the duteous is achievement -

Yusuf Ali

31 Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires;

Saheeh International

32 Gardens and grapevines

Pickthall

32 Gardens enclosed and vineyards,

Yusuf Ali

32 Gardens enclosed, and grapevines;

Saheeh International

33 And full - breasted [companions] of equal age

Pickthall

33 And maidens for companions,

Yusuf Ali

33 And voluptuous women of equal age;

Saheeh International

34 And a full cup.

Pickthall

34 And a full cup.

Yusuf Ali

34 And a cup full (to the brim).

Saheeh International

35 No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

Pickthall

35 There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying -

Yusuf Ali

35 No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth: -

Saheeh International

36 [As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,

Pickthall

36 Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment -

Yusuf Ali

36 Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient,

Saheeh International

37 [From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.

Pickthall

37 Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.

Yusuf Ali

37 (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (Allah) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.

Saheeh International

38 The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

38 On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.

Yusuf Ali

38 The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.

Saheeh International

39 That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.

Pickthall

39 That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.

39 That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord!

Saheeh International

40 Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

Pickthall

40 Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"

40 Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!"
