1 The Most Merciful

1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The Most Gracious (Allah)!

1 The Beneficent Allah,

2 Taught the Qur'an,

2 He has taught (you mankind) the Qur'an (by His Mercy).

2 Taught the Quran.

3 Created man,

3 He created man.

3 He created man,

4 [And] taught him eloquence.

4 He taught him eloquent speech.

4 Taught him the mode of expression.

5 The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,

5 The sun and the moon run on their fixed courses (exactly) calculated with measured out stages for each (for reckoning).

5 The sun and the moon follow a reckoning.

6 And the stars and trees prostrate.

6 And the herbs (or stars) and the trees both prostrate themselves (to Allah - See V.22:18) (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

6 And the herbs and the trees do prostrate (to Him).

7 And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance

7 And the heaven: He has raised it high, and He has set up the Balance.

7 And the heaven, He raised it high, and He made the balance

8 That you not transgress within the balance.

8 In order that you may not transgress (due) balance.

8 That you may not be inordinate in respect of the measure.

9 And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.

9 And observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient.

9 And keep up the balance with equity and do not make the measure deficient.

10 And the earth He laid [out] for the creatures.

10 And the earth: He has put down (laid) for the creatures.

10 And the earth, He has set it for living creatures;

11 Therein is fruit and palm trees having sheaths [of dates]

11 Therein are fruits and date-palms producing sheathed fruit-stalks (enclosing dates).

11 Therein is fruit and palms having sheathed clusters,

12 And grain having husks and scented plants.

12 And also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-scented plants.

12 And the grain with (its) husk and fragrance.

13 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

13 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

13 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

14 He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.

14 He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like the clay of pottery.

14 He created man from dry clay like earthen vessels,

15 And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.

15 And the jinn: He created from a smokeless flame of fire.

15 And He created the jinn of a flame of fire.

16 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

16 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

16 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

17 [He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets.

17 (He is) the Lord of the two easts (places of sunrise during early summer and early winter) and the Lord of the two wests (places of sunset during early summer and early winter).

17 Lord of the East and Lord of the West.

18 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

18 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

18 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

19 He released the two seas, meeting [side by side];

19 He has let loose the two seas (the salt and fresh water) meeting together.

19 He has made the two seas to flow freely (so that) they meet together:

20 Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.

20 Between them is a barrier which none of them can transgress.

20 Between them is a barrier which they cannot pass.

21 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

21 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

21 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

22 From both of them emerge pearl and coral.

22 Out of them both come out pearl and coral.

22 There come forth from them pearls, both large and small.

23 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

23 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

23 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

24 And to Him belong the ships [with sails] elevated in the sea like mountains.

24 And His are the ships going and coming in the seas, like mountains.

24 And His are the ships reared aloft in the sea like mountains.

25 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

25 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

25 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

26 Everyone upon the earth will perish,

26 Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish.

26 Everyone on it must pass away.

27 And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

27 And the Face of your Lord full of Majesty and Honour will remain forever.

27 And there will endure for ever the person of your Lord, the Lord of glory and honor.

28 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

28 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

28 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

29 Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is bringing about a matter.

29 Whosoever is in the heavens and on earth begs of Him (its needs from Him). Every day He is (engaged) in some affair (such as giving honour or disgrace to some, life or death to some, etc.)!

29 All those who are in the heavens and the earth ask of Him; every moment He is in a state (of glory).

30 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

30 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

30 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

31 We will attend to you, O prominent beings.

31 We shall attend to you, O you two classes (jinn and men)!

31 Soon will We apply Ourselves to you, O you two armies.

32 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

32 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

32 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

33 O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah].

33 O assembly of jinn and men! If you have power to pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, then pass beyond (them)! But you will never be able to pass them, except with authority (from Allah)!

33 O assembly of the jinn and the men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with authority.

34 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

34 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

34 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

35 There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves.

35 There will be sent against you both, smokeless flames of fire and (molten) brass, and you will not be able to defend yourselves.

35 The flames of fire and smoke will be sent on you two, then you will not be able to defend yourselves.

36 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

36 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

36 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

37 And when the heaven is split open and becomes rose - colored like oil -

37 Then when the heaven is rent asunder, and it becomes rosy or red like red-oil, or red hide - [See V.70:8]

37 And when the heaven is rent asunder, and then becomes red like red hide.

38 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

38 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

38 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

39 Then on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn.

39 So on that Day no question will be asked of man or jinns as to his sin, [because they have already been known from their faces either white (dwellers of Paradise - true believers of Islamic Monotheism) or black (dwellers of Hell - polytheists; disbelievers, criminals)].

39 So on that day neither man nor jinni shall be asked about his sin.

40 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

40 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

40 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

41 The criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet.

41 The Mujrimun (polytheists, criminals, sinners) will be known by their marks (black faces), and they will be seized by their forelocks and their feet.

41 The guilty shall be recognized by their marks, so they shall be seized by the forelocks and the feet.

42 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

42 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

42 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

43 This is Hell, which the criminals deny.

43 This is the Hell which the Mujrimun (polytheists, criminals, sinners) denied.

43 This is the hell which the guilty called a lie.

44 They will go around between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree].

44 They will go between it (Hell) and the fierce boiling water!

44 Round about shall they go between it and hot, boiling water.

45 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

45 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

45 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

46 But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens -

46 But for him who fears the standing before his Lord, there will be two Gardens (i.e. in Paradise).

46 And for him who fears to stand before his Lord are two gardens.

47 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

47 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

47 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

48 Having [spreading] branches.

48 With spreading branches.

48 Having in them various kinds.

49 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

49 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

49 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

50 In both of them are two springs, flowing.

50 In them (both) will be two springs flowing (free).

50 In both of them are two fountains flowing.

51 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

51 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

51 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

52 In both of them are of every fruit, two kinds.

52 In them (both) will be every kind of fruit in pairs.

52 In both of them are two pairs of every fruit.

53 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

53 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

53 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

54 [They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low.

54 Reclining upon the couches lined with silk brocade, and the fruits of the two Gardens will be near at hand.

54 Reclining on beds, the inner coverings of which are of silk brocade; and the fruits of the two gardens shall be within reach.

55 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

55 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

55 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

56 In them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni -

56 Wherein both will be Qasirat-ut-Tarf [chaste females (wives) restraining their glances, desiring none except their husbands], with whom no man or jinni has had tamth before them.

56 In them shall be those who restrained their eyes; before them neither man nor jinni shall have touched them.

57 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

57 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

57 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

58 As if they were rubies and coral.

58 (In beauty) they are like rubies and coral.

58 As though they were rubies and pearls.

59 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

59 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

59 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

60 Is the reward for good [anything] but good?

60 Is there any reward for good other than good?

60 Is the reward of goodness aught but goodness?

61 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

61 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

61 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

62 And below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens -

62 And besides these two, there are two other Gardens (i.e. in Paradise).

62 And besides these two are two (other) gardens:

63 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

63 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

63 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

64 Dark green [in color].

64 Dark green (in colour).

64 Both inclining to blackness.

65 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

65 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

65 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

66 In both of them are two springs, spouting.

66 In them (both) will be two springs gushing forth.

66 In both of them are two springs gushing forth.

67 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

67 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

67 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

68 In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.

68 In them (both) will be fruits, and date-palms and pomegranates.

68 In both are fruits and palms and pomegranates.

69 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

69 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

69 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

70 In them are good and beautiful women -

70 Therein (Gardens) will be Khairatun-Hisan [fair (wives) good and beautiful];

70 In them are goodly things, beautiful ones.

71 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

71 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

71 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

72 Fair ones reserved in pavilions -

72 Hur (beautiful, fair females) guarded in pavilions;

72 Pure ones confined to the pavilions.

73 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

73 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

73 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

74 Untouched before them by man or jinni -

74 With whom no man or jinni has had tamth before them.

74 Man has not touched them before them nor jinni.

75 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

75 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

75 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

76 Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.

76 Reclining on green cushions and rich beautiful mattresses.

76 Reclining on green cushions and beautiful carpets.

77 So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

77 Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?

77 Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

78 Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

78 Blessed be the Name of your Lord (Allah), the Owner of Majesty and Honour.

78 Blessed be the name of your Lord, the Lord of Glory and Honor!
