Saheeh International

1 By the night when it covers

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. By the night enshrouding

Yusuf Ali

1 By the Night as it conceals (the light);

Saheeh International

2 And [by] the day when it appears

Pickthall

2 And the day resplendent

Yusuf Ali

2 By the Day as it appears in glory;

Saheeh International

3 And [by] He who created the male and female,

Pickthall

3 And Him Who hath created male and female,

Yusuf Ali

3 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female; -

Saheeh International

4 Indeed, your efforts are diverse.

Pickthall

4 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).

Yusuf Ali

4 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

Saheeh International

5 As for he who gives and fears Allah

Pickthall

5 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)

Yusuf Ali

5 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),

Saheeh International

6 And believes in the best [reward],

Pickthall

6 And believeth in goodness;

Yusuf Ali

6 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best, -

Saheeh International

7 We will ease him toward ease.

Pickthall

7 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.

Yusuf Ali

7 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.

Saheeh International

8 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need

Pickthall

8 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,

Yusuf Ali

8 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self - sufficient,

Saheeh International

9 And denies the best [reward],

Pickthall

9 And disbelieveth in goodness;

Yusuf Ali

9 And gives the lie to the best, -

Saheeh International

10 We will ease him toward difficulty.

Pickthall

10 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity.

Yusuf Ali

10 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;

Saheeh International

11 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?

Pickthall

11 His riches will not save him when he perisheth.

Yusuf Ali

11 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).

Saheeh International

12 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.

Pickthall

12 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance

Yusuf Ali

12 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide,

Saheeh International

13 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

Pickthall

13 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.

Yusuf Ali

13 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.

Saheeh International

14 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.

Pickthall

14 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire

Yusuf Ali

14 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;

Saheeh International

15 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.

Pickthall

15 Which only the most wretched must endure,

Yusuf Ali

15 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

Saheeh International

16 Who had denied and turned away.

Pickthall

16 He who denieth and turneth away.

Yusuf Ali

16 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

Saheeh International

17 But the righteous one will avoid it -

Pickthall

17 Far removed from it will be the righteous

Yusuf Ali

17 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it, -

Saheeh International

18 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself

Pickthall

18 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).

Yusuf Ali

18 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self - purification,

Saheeh International

19 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded

Pickthall

19 And none hath with him any favour for reward,

Yusuf Ali

19 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

Saheeh International

20 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.

Pickthall

20 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.

Yusuf Ali

20 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;

Saheeh International

21 And he is going to be satisfied.

Pickthall

21 He verily will be content.

Yusuf Ali

21 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
