1 When the Sky is cleft asunder;

Transliteration

1 Itha alssamao infatarat

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. When the heaven is cleft asunder,

2 When the Stars are scattered;

Transliteration

2 Waitha alkawakibu intatharat

2 When the planets are dispersed,

3 When the Oceans are suffered to burst forth;

Transliteration

3 Waitha albiharu fujjirat

3 When the seas are poured forth,

Yusuf Ali

4 And when the Graves are turned upside down; -

Transliteration

4 Waitha alqubooru buAAthirat

4 And the sepulchres are overturned,

Yusuf Ali

5 (Then) shall each soul know what it hath sent forward and (what it hath) kept back.

Transliteration

5 AAalimat nafsun ma qaddamat waakhkharat

5 A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind.

Yusuf Ali

6 O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent? -

Transliteration

6 Ya ayyuha alinsanu ma gharraka birabbika alkareemi

6 O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful,

Yusuf Ali

7 Him Who created thee. Fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias;

Transliteration

7 Allathee khalaqaka fasawwaka faAAadalaka

7 Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee ?

8 In whatever Form He wills, does He put thee together.

Transliteration

8 Fee ayyi sooratin ma shaa rakkabaka

8 Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee.

9 Nay! But ye do reject Right and Judgment!

Transliteration

9 Kalla bal tukaththiboona bialddeeni

9 Nay, but ye deny the Judgment.

Yusuf Ali

10 But verily over you (are appointed angels) to protect you, -

Transliteration

10 Wainna AAalaykum lahafitheena

10 Lo! there are above you guardians,

Yusuf Ali

11 Kind and honourable, - Writing down (your deeds):

Transliteration

11 Kiraman katibeena

11 Generous and recording,

Yusuf Ali

12 They know (and understand) all that ye do.

Transliteration

12 YaAAlamoona ma tafAAaloona

12 Who know (all) that ye do.

Yusuf Ali

13 As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss;

Transliteration

13 Inna alabrara lafee naAAeemin

Pickthall

13 Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight.

14 And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire,

Transliteration

14 Wainna alfujjara lafee jaheemin

14 And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell;

Yusuf Ali

15 Which they will enter on the Day of Judgment,

Transliteration

15 Yaslawnaha yawma alddeeni

15 They will burn therein on the Day of Judgment,

Yusuf Ali

16 And they will not be able to keep away therefrom.

Transliteration

16 Wama hum AAanha bighaibeena

16 And will not be absent thence.

17 And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

Transliteration

17 Wama adraka ma yawmu alddeeni

17 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!

18 Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

Transliteration

18 Thumma ma adraka ma yawmu alddeeni

Pickthall

18 Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!

Yusuf Ali

19 (It will be) the Day when no soul shall have power (to do) aught for another: For the command, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah.

19 Yawma la tamliku nafsun linafsin shayan waalamru yawmaithin lillahi

19 A day on which no soul hath power at all for any (other) soul. The (absolute) command on that day is Allah's.
