Al Waqi'a

1 When the Event inevitable cometh to pass,

1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.

1 When the great event comes to pass,

2 Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

2 And there can be no denial of its befalling.

2 There is no belying its coming to pass - -

3 (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;

3 Bringing low (some - those who will enter Hell) Exalting (others - those who will enter Paradise). [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

3 Abasing (one party), exalting (the other),

4 When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

4 When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.

4 When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking,

5 And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,

5 And the mountains will be powdered to dust,

5 And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling,

6 Becoming dust scattered abroad,

6 So that they will become floating dust particles.

6 So that they shall be as scattered dust.

7 And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.

7 And you (all) will be in three groups.

7 And you shall be three sorts.

8 Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand; - What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

8 So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands) - how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand! (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).

8 Then (as to) the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand!

9 And the Companions of the Left Hand, - what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

9 And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands) - how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand! (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).

9 And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand!

10 And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).

10 And those foremost [(in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam] will be foremost (in Paradise).

10 And the foremost are the foremost,

11 These will be those Nearest to Allah:

11 These will be the nearest (to Allah).

11 These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah),

12 In Gardens of Bliss:

12 In the Gardens of Delight (Paradise).

12 In the gardens of bliss.

13 A number of people from those of old,

13 A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islam).

13 A numerous company from among the first,

14 And a few from those of later times.

14 And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later generations.

14 And a few from among the latter.

15 (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones),

15 (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones.

15 On thrones decorated,

16 Reclining on them, facing each other.

16 Reclining thereon, face to face.

16 Reclining on them, facing one another.

17 Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness),

17 Immortal boys will go around them (serving),

17 Round about them shall go youths never altering in age,

18 With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear - flowing fountains:

18 With cups, and jugs, and a glass of flowing wine,

18 With goblets and ewers and a cup of pure drink;

19 No after - ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:

19 Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.

19 They shall not be affected with headache thereby, nor shall they get exhausted,

20 And with fruits, any that they may select:

20 And with fruit that they may choose.

20 And fruits such as they choose,

21 And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire.

21 And with the flesh of fowls that they desire.

21 And the flesh of fowl such as they desire.

22 And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes, -

22 And (there will be) Hur (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for "Al-Muttaqun" - the pious - See V. 2:2),

22 And pure, beautiful ones,

23 Like unto Pearls well - guarded.

23 Like unto preserved pearls.

23 The like of the hidden pearls:

24 A Reward for the deeds of their past (life).

24 A reward for what they used to do.

24 A reward for what they used to do.

25 Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill, -

25 No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting).

25 They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse,

26 Only the saying, "Peace! Peace".

26 But only the saying of: Salam! Salam! (greetings with peace)!

26 Except the word peace, peace.

27 The Companions of the Right Hand, - what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

27 And those on the Right Hand - how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand?

27 And the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand!

28 (They will be) among Lote - trees without thorns,

28 (They will be) among thornless lote-trees,

28 Amid thornless lote - trees,

29 Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another, -

29 And among Talh (banana-trees) with fruits piled one above another,

29 And banana - trees (with fruits), one above another.

30 In shade long - extended,

30 And in shade long-extended,

30 And extended shade,

31 By water flowing constantly,

31 And by water flowing constantly,

31 And water flowing constantly,

32 And fruit in abundance.

32 And fruit in plenty,

32 And abundant fruit,

33 Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden,

33 Whose supply is not cut off (by change of season), nor are they out of reach,

33 Neither intercepted nor forbidden,

34 And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high.

34 And on couches or thrones, raised high.

34 And exalted thrones.

35 We have created (their Companions) of special creation.

35 Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.

35 Surely We have made them to grow into a (new) growth,

36 And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), -

36 And made them virgins.

36 Then We have made them virgins,

37 Beloved (by nature), equal in age, -

37 Loving (their husbands only), (and) of equal age.

37 Loving, equals in age,

38 For the Companions of the Right Hand.

38 For those on the Right Hand.

38 For the sake of the companions of the right hand.

39 A (goodly) number from those of old,

39 A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam).

39 A numerous company from among the first,

40 And a (goodly) number from those of later times.

40 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later generations.

40 And a numerous company from among the last.

41 The Companions of the Left Hand, - what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

41 And those on the Left Hand - how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand?

41 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand!

42 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water,

42 In fierce hot wind and boiling water,

42 In hot wind and boiling water,

43 And in the shades of Black Smoke:

43 And shadow of black smoke,

43 And the shade of black smoke,

44 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:

44 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) pleasant,

44 Neither cool nor honorable.

45 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),

45 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,

45 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty.

46 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

46 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murder and other crimes)

46 And they persisted in the great violation.

47 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again? -

47 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?

47 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised?

48 "(We) and our fathers of old?"

48 "And also our forefathers?"

48 Or our fathers of yore?

49 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times,

49 Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.

49 Say: The first and the last,

50 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well - known.

50 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day.

50 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day.

51 "Then will ye truly, - O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood! -

51 "Then moreover, verily you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!

51 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie!

52 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.

52 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum.

52 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom,

53 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith,

53 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith,

53 And fill (your) bellies with it;

54 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it:

54 "And drink boiling water on top of it.

54 Then drink over it of boiling water;

55 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!"

55 "And you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"

55 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel.

56 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!

56 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!

56 This is their entertainment on the day of requital.

57 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?

57 We created you: then why do you believe not?

57 We have created you, why do you not then assent?

58 Do ye then see? - The (human Seed) that ye throw out, -

58 Then tell Me (about) the (human) semen that you emit.

58 Have you considered the seed?

59 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators?

59 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator?

59 Is it you that create it or are We the creators?

60 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated

60 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not outstripped,

60 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome,

61 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not.

61 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.

61 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not.

62 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?

62 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam): why then do you not remember (or take heed)?

62 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind?

63 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?

63 Then tell Me about the seed that you sow in the ground.

63 Have you considered what you sow?

64 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause?

64 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?

64 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth?

65 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment,

65 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment) [Tafsir Ibn Kathir].

65 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament:

66 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing):

66 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or have lost the money without any profit, or are punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation)! (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi)

66 Surely we are burdened with debt:

67 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)"

67 "Nay, but we are deprived!"

67 Nay! we are deprived.

68 See ye the water which ye drink?

68 Then tell Me about the water that you drink.

68 Have you considered the water which you drink?

69 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We?

69 Is it you who cause it from the rain-clouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down?

69 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders?

70 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks?

70 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable): why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)?

70 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks?

71 See ye the Fire which ye kindle?

71 Then tell Me about the fire which you kindle.

71 Have you considered the fire which you strike?

72 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it?

72 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?

72 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers?

73 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.

73 We have made it a Reminder (of the Hell-fire in the Hereafter), and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world).

73 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert.

74 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme!

74 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

74 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.

75 Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars, -

75 So I swear by the setting of the stars.

75 But nay! I swear by the falling of stars;

76 And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew, -

76 And verily that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.

76 And most surely it is a very great oath if you only knew;

77 That this is indeed a qur'an Most Honourable,

77 That (this) is indeed an honourable recitation (the Noble Qur'an).

77 Most surely it is an honored Quran,

78 In Book well - guarded,

78 In a Book well-guarded (with Allah in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz ).

78 In a book that is protected

79 Which none shall touch but those who are clean:

79 Which (that Book with Allah) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels).

79 None shall touch it save the purified ones.

80 A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

80 A Revelation (this Qur'an) from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

80 A revelation by the Lord of the worlds.

81 Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?

81 Is it such a talk (this Qur'an) that you (disbelievers) deny?

81 Do you then hold this announcement in contempt?

82 And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?

82 And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, you deny (Him by disbelief)!

82 And to give (it) the lie you make your means of subsistence.

83 Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat, -

83 Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?

83 Why is it not then that when it (soul) comes up to the throat,

84 And ye the while (sit) looking on, -

84 And you at the moment are looking on,

84 And you at that time look on - -

85 But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not, -

85 But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, (Tafsir At-Tabari)

85 And We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see - -

86 Then why do ye not, - If you are exempt from (future) account, -

86 Then why do you not - if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment) -

86 Then why is it not - - if you are not held under authority - -

87 Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?

87 Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?

87 That you send it (not) back - - if you are truthful?

88 Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,

88 Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabun (those brought near to Allah),

88 Then if he is one of those drawn nigh (to Allah),

89 (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.

89 (There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise).

89 Then happiness and bounty and a garden of bliss.

90 And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,

90 And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,

90 And if he is one of those on the right hand,

91 (For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.

91 Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allah) for those on the right Hand.

91 Then peace to you from those on the right hand.

92 And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,

92 But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islamic Monotheism),

92 And if he is one of the rejecters, the erring ones,

93 For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.

93 Then for him is an entertainment with boiling water.

93 He shall have an entertainment of boiling water,

94 And burning in Hell - Fire.

94 And burning in Hell-fire.

94 And burning in hell.

95 Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.

95 Verily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.

95 Most surely this is a certain truth.

96 So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.

96 So glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

96 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
