1 I do call to witness the Resurrection Day;

1 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I swear by the Day of Resurrection.

Transliteration

1 La oqsimu biyawmi alqiyamati

Yusuf Ali

2 And I do call to witness the self - reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).

2 And I swear by the self-reproaching person (a believer).

Transliteration

2 Wala oqsimu bialnnafsi allawwamati

Yusuf Ali

3 Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones?

3 Does man (a disbeliever) think that We shall not assemble his bones?

Transliteration

3 Ayahsabu alinsanu allan najmaAAa AAithamahu

4 Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.

4 Yes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers.

Transliteration

4 Bala qadireena AAala an nusawwiya bananahu

Yusuf Ali

5 But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.

5 Nay! Man (denies Resurrection and Reckoning. So he) desires to continue committing sins.

Transliteration

5 Bal yureedu alinsanu liyafjura amamahu

Yusuf Ali

6 He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

6 He asks: "When will be this Day of Resurrection?"

Transliteration

6 Yasalu ayyana yawmu alqiyamati

Yusuf Ali

7 At length, when the sight is dazed,

7 So, when the sight shall be dazed.

Transliteration

7 Faitha bariqa albasaru

Yusuf Ali

8 And the moon is buried in darkness.

8 And the moon will be eclipsed.

Transliteration

8 Wakhasafa alqamaru

Yusuf Ali

9 And the sun and moon are joined together, -

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

9 And the sun and moon will be joined together (by going one into the other or folded up or deprived of their light).

Transliteration

9 WajumiAAa alshshamsu waalqamaru

Yusuf Ali

10 That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"

10 On that Day man will say: "Where (is the refuge) to flee?"

Transliteration

10 Yaqoolu alinsanu yawmaithin ayna almafarru

Yusuf Ali

11 By no means! No place of safety!

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

11 No! There is no refuge!

Transliteration

11 Kalla la wazara

Yusuf Ali

12 Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

12 Unto your Lord (Alone) will be the place of rest that Day.

Transliteration

12 Ila rabbika yawmaithin almustaqarru

Yusuf Ali

13 That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

13 On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward (of his evil good deeds), and what he left behind (of his good or evil traditions).

Transliteration

13 Yunabbao alinsanu yawmaithin bima qaddama waakhkhara

Yusuf Ali

14 Nay, man will be evidence against himself,

14 Nay! Man will be a witness against himself [as his body parts (skin, hands, legs, etc.) will speak about his deeds],

Transliteration

14 Bali alinsanu AAala nafsihi baseeratun

Yusuf Ali

15 Even though he were to put up his excuses.

15 Though he may put forth his excuses (to cover his evil deeds).

Transliteration

15 Walaw alqa maAAatheerahu

Yusuf Ali

16 Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.

16 Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) to make haste therewith.

Transliteration

16 La tuharrik bihi lisanaka litaAAjala bihi

17 It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it:

17 It is for Us to collect it and to give you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) the ability to recite it (the Qur'an).

Transliteration

17 Inna AAalayna jamAAahu waquranahu

Yusuf Ali

18 But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated):

18 And when We have recited it to you [O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم through Jibril (Gabriel)], then follow its (the Qur'an's) recital.

Transliteration

18 Faitha qaranahu faittabiAA quranahu

19 Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear):

19 Then it is for Us (Allah) to make it clear (to you).

Transliteration

19 Thumma inna AAalayna bayanahu

Yusuf Ali

20 Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

20 Not [as you think, that you (mankind) will not be resurrected and recompensed for your deeds], but you (men) love the present life of this world,

Transliteration

20 Kalla bal tuhibboona alAAajilata

Yusuf Ali

21 And leave alone the Hereafter.

21 And neglect the Hereafter.

Transliteration

21 Watatharoona alakhirata

Yusuf Ali

22 Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty); -

22 Some faces that Day shall be Nadirah (shining and radiant).

Transliteration

22 Wujoohun yawmaithin nadiratun

Yusuf Ali

23 Looking towards their Lord;

23 Looking at their Lord (Allah).

Transliteration

23 Ila rabbiha nathiratun

Yusuf Ali

24 And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,

24 And some faces, that Day, will be Basirah (dark, gloomy, frowning, and sad),

Transliteration

24 Wawujoohun yawmaithin basiratun

Yusuf Ali

25 In the thought that some back - breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;

25 Thinking that some calamity is about to fall on them.

Transliteration

25 Tathunnu an yufAAala biha faqiratun

Yusuf Ali

26 Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar - bone (in its exit),

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

26 Nay, when (the soul) reaches to the collar bone (i.e. up to the throat in its exit),

Transliteration

26 Kalla itha balaghati alttaraqiya

Yusuf Ali

27 And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"

27 And it will be said: "Who can cure him (and save him from death)?"

Transliteration

27 Waqeela man raqin

Yusuf Ali

28 And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

28 And he (the dying person) will conclude that it was (the time) of parting (death);

Transliteration

28 Wathanna annahu alfiraqu

Yusuf Ali

29 And one leg will be joined with another:

29 And one leg will be joined with another leg (shrouded).

Transliteration

29 Wailtaffati alssaqu bialssaqi

Yusuf Ali

30 That Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

30 The drive will be, on that Day, to your Lord (Allah)!

Transliteration

30 Ila rabbika yawmaithin almasaqu

Yusuf Ali

31 So he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray! -

31 So he (the disbeliever) neither believed (in this Qur'an and in the Message of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) nor prayed!

Transliteration

31 Fala saddaqa wala salla

Yusuf Ali

32 But on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!

32 But on the contrary, he belied (this Qur'an and the Message of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) and turned away!

Transliteration

32 Walakin kaththaba watawalla

Yusuf Ali

33 Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit!

33 Then he walked in conceit (full pride) to his family admiring himself!

Transliteration

33 Thumma thahaba ila ahlihi yatamatta

Yusuf Ali

34 Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!

34 Woe to you [O man (disbeliever)]! And then (again) woe to you!

Transliteration

34 Awla laka faawla

Yusuf Ali

35 Again, Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

35 Again, woe to you [O man (disbeliever)]! And then (again) woe to you!

Transliteration

35 Thumma awla laka faawla

36 Does man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?

36 Does man think that he will be left neglected (without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord Allah on him)?

Transliteration

36 Ayahsabu alinsanu an yutraka sudan

37 Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)?

37 Was he not a Nutfah (mixed male and female sexual discharge) of semen emitted (poured forth)?

Transliteration

37 Alam yaku nutfatan min manayyin yumna

Yusuf Ali

38 Then did he become a leech - like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.

38 Then he became an 'Alaqah (a clot); then (Allah) shaped and fashioned (him) in due proportion.

Transliteration

38 Thumma kana AAalaqatan fakhalaqa fasawwa

39 And of him He made two sexes, male and female.

39 And made of him two sexes, male and female.

Transliteration

39 FajaAAala minhu alzzawjayni alththakara waalontha

Yusuf Ali

40 Has not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead?

Hilali & Muhsin Khan

40 Is not He (Allah Who does that) Able to give life to the dead? (Yes! He is Able to do all things).

Transliteration

40 Alaysa thalika biqadirin AAala an yuhyiya almawta
