1 (The Prophet) frowned and turned away,

1 The Prophet frowned and turned away

1 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. He frowned and turned away

Yusuf Ali

2 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).

Saheeh International

2 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Pickthall

2 Because the blind man came unto him.

Yusuf Ali

3 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)? -

Saheeh International

3 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

3 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)

Yusuf Ali

4 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?

Saheeh International

4 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Pickthall

4 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him ?

Yusuf Ali

5 As to one who regards Himself as self - sufficient,

Saheeh International

5 As for he who thinks himself without need,

5 As for him who thinketh himself independent,

Yusuf Ali

6 To him dost thou attend;

Saheeh International

6 To him you give attention.

6 Unto him thou payest regard.

Yusuf Ali

7 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).

Saheeh International

7 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Pickthall

7 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).

Yusuf Ali

8 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,

Saheeh International

8 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

8 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose

Yusuf Ali

9 And with fear (in his heart),

Saheeh International

9 While he fears [Allah],

Pickthall

9 And hath fear,

Yusuf Ali

10 Of him wast thou unmindful.

Saheeh International

10 From him you are distracted.

10 From him thou art distracted.

Yusuf Ali

11 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:

Saheeh International

11 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

11 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,

Yusuf Ali

12 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.

Saheeh International

12 So whoever wills may remember it.

12 So let whosoever will pay heed to it,

Yusuf Ali

13 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,

Saheeh International

13 [It is recorded] in honored sheets,

13 On honoured leaves

Yusuf Ali

14 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,

Saheeh International

14 Exalted and purified,

14 Exalted, purified,

15 (Written) by the hands of scribes -

Saheeh International

15 [Carried] by the hands of messenger - angels,

16 Honourable and Pious and Just.

16 Noble and dutiful.

16 Noble and righteous.

Yusuf Ali

17 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;

Saheeh International

17 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

17 Man is (self - )destroyed: how ungrateful!

Yusuf Ali

18 From what stuff hath He created him?

Saheeh International

18 From what substance did He create him?

Pickthall

18 From what thing doth He create him ?

Yusuf Ali

19 From a sperm - drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;

Saheeh International

19 From a sperm - drop He created him and destined for him;

19 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,

Yusuf Ali

20 Then doth He make His path smooth for him;

Saheeh International

20 Then He eased the way for him;

20 Then maketh the way easy for him,

Yusuf Ali

21 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;

Saheeh International

21 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

21 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;

22 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).

Saheeh International

22 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

22 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.

Yusuf Ali

23 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.

Saheeh International

23 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

23 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.

Yusuf Ali

24 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):

24 Then let mankind look at his food -

24 Let man consider his food:

Yusuf Ali

25 For that We pour forth water in abundance,

Saheeh International

25 How We poured down water in torrents,

Pickthall

25 How We pour water in showers

Yusuf Ali

26 And We split the earth in fragments,

Saheeh International

26 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

26 Then split the earth in clefts

Yusuf Ali

27 And produce therein corn,

Saheeh International

27 And caused to grow within it grain

27 And cause the grain to grow therein

Yusuf Ali

28 And Grapes and nutritious plants,

Saheeh International

28 And grapes and herbage

28 And grapes and green fodder

Yusuf Ali

29 And Olives and Dates,

Saheeh International

29 And olive and palm trees

29 And olive - trees and palm - trees

Yusuf Ali

30 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,

Saheeh International

30 And gardens of dense shrubbery

Pickthall

30 And garden - closes of thick foliage

Yusuf Ali

31 And fruits and fodder, -

Saheeh International

31 And fruit and grass -

31 And fruits and grasses:

Yusuf Ali

32 For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

Saheeh International

32 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

32 Provision for you and your cattle.

Yusuf Ali

33 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise, -

Saheeh International

33 But when there comes the Deafening Blast

33 But when the Shout cometh

Yusuf Ali

34 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,

Saheeh International

34 On the Day a man will flee from his brother

34 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother

35 And from his mother and his father,

35 And his mother and his father

35 And his mother and his father

36 And from his wife and his children.

Saheeh International

36 And his wife and his children,

36 And his wife and his children,

37 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

Saheeh International

37 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

37 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).

38 Some faces that Day will be beaming,

Saheeh International

38 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

38 On that day faces will be bright as dawn,

Yusuf Ali

39 Laughing, rejoicing.

Saheeh International

39 Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

Pickthall

39 Laughing, rejoicing at good news;

Yusuf Ali

40 And other faces that Day will be dust - stained,

Saheeh International

40 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

40 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,

Yusuf Ali

41 Blackness will cover them:

Saheeh International

41 Blackness will cover them.

41 Veiled in darkness,

Yusuf Ali

42 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.

Saheeh International

42 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
